First Major Memory of my Mum "The Miracle of Winter 1966/67"

Created by Osprey 7 years ago
Of course there are earlier memory clips of Mum that I possess but this was the 1st epic!!
It would have been during the Winter of 1966/67, England were world Champions so all was well.
Location: 10 Victoria Terrace, Blackdown, Hampshire, England.

Winter was well established and ticking along as normal except for one missing essential!!!! SNOW!

I must have asked Mum a thousand times " When is the snow coming Mum?" "soon" she would reply, she was great at one word answers.

Again I would ask "But when Mum?" "Later" she would throw back.

On & on for days the same theme I'm sure until one night.........The first miracle my Mother had performed was sprung upon me.

Mum had read my customary bedtime story of Witches, Goblins & Elf's from Enid Blyton's book six O’clock Tales.
Soon after I fell into my usual short period of death that some people call sleep!
Here is when the 1st Miracle happened:
I was softly awoken, with the words from Mum ever so slowly whispering into my ear....."It's……….. Snowing!"
For a 6year old being woken up when he’s supposed to be sleeping… Fantastic! And to be told the long awaited snow is here… Ecstatic!!
From there I was even allowed to get out of bed and look out of the window, this is too good to be true! Getting woken up to the words it snowing and even being allowed to get out of bed to look at it??? Yes sir, damb right that’s a MIRACLE!!

While I stood at the window my thoughts quickly turned to the morning time when I would get to go out into it and build the 1st snowman of the year!

2nd Miracle of the night: I, in my wildest dreams would never have seen this one coming!! Mum then uttered the most Angelic words I had ever heard.
“let’s go outside” Oh my Lawdy Mama!!
This evening started out as an average night but is now turning into Trafalgar, Christmas and Wembley 66 all rolled into one!

Whoosh!!! Down the stairs we went no time to get out of PJ’s, wellies on and out into the gentle falling snow flakes that were now beginning to collect on the road.

The Front of Victoria terrace looked out to an area like a fore court facing another row of exact same terraced housing.
Snow was falling out of the dark sky and for the last 15ft before landing on the road twas illuminated by street lamps, I looked around & Discovered we were not alone, the whole street had spilled out, including my buddy Martin from across the way.
Mum was laughing patting snowballs to throw into the air that landed with a great thud. I was as warm as toast in my PJ’s and Wellies, all the while Grinning from ear to ear!
That short burst of fun at the expense of being in bed and fully endorsed by my Mum
truly was the Miracle of Winter 66/67.
Love you Mum XX.
